Is Cell Meat Vegan?

Yes, I’m going to get into the argument about the question, “is cell meat vegan?”.

Ever since the discovery of cell meat, vegans have been arguing over whether or not it can be included in the vegan food list.

From my understanding, the Vegan Society is adamant that meat produced in a lab is not vegan.

First, let’s look at how cell meat (also called lab meat or cultured meat) is created.

The process begins by taking a tissue biopsy of cells from an animal. Before getting alarmed, the cells can also be sourced from a feather or hair follicle. They are placed in a controlled and sterile environment beginning in a small flask and, as they grow, going up to a bioreactor. How fast they expand depends on the company’s process and technology.

The cells are fed a nutrient-rich food enabling them to grow and form into the meat.

Obviously, this is a simplified version of a very intensive and exact science. But it works. Cell meat is now a thing! Perhaps not quite on the supermarket shelves, but the US FDA has given approval so it’s coming.

So where does that leave vegans?

Going by the Society’s definition of veganism:
