How To Not Look Like Your Mother

How did I get to look like my mother? I’m still in my 30s, aren’t I?

The mirror holds a fascination for me as I look in at the reflection. Some days I see a young woman full of hopes and desires for the adventures of life. Then there are other days when the mirror’s image shows a senior citizen who looks a lot like my mother. Is it her? What is she doing in my body?

Memories flood back to the time I got my first pair of glasses. I was around 12 years old. My mother was still a ‘young’ woman at 50 or so she thought. You can imagine her horror when I put the glasses on, looked at her and exclaimed: “you’ve got wrinkles!” Her reaction was, “take them off”.

The first sign came when the backs of my hands began to get darkened spots. I’m sure you know the ones, they’re probably on the back of your parent’s hands right now (or yours!). These are ‘age spots’ or ‘liver spots’ according to my doctor… what does she know? I’m not old!

But I am according to the age scale. I can now see 70 on the horizon, granted I still need binoculars, but next year all I’ll need to do is…
