Here are 10 fun food facts that may surprise you.

1. Apples belong to the rose family, and this is probably the sixth most economically important crop plant families. Other edibles that also are ‘roses’ are:

Just about all varieties can be traced back to one common ancestor called Malus sieversii. It’s native to southern Kazakhstan, and it still grows there to this day.

2. And talking of apples … 25% of their volume is air — that’s why they can float.

3. Cheese. Were you aware that often that the cellulose from wood pulp is used in shredded cheese and other cheese products? The reason is that this ‘sawdust’ helps to prevent it from clumping. It can also be found in some cereals too.

4. Capsicums or bell peppers. The different colours are different peppers. In other words, each colour has it’s own seed. In the case of the green pepper — this is sometimes just unripe red, yellow or orange peppers, but because there is a green coloured pepper you don’t know which you’ve got when you’re buying it.
